From time to time it’s always good to look at things from a new perspective, and the regional tourist board of Murcia is encouraging both locals and visitors to take a look at the area from above with a series of airborne adventures which are well withing the budget of almost everyone!
The first recommendation is to get the adrenaline pumping through the body with a little hang-gliding in the mountains of the Sierra Espuña, one of the first places in Murcia where the sport became popular. The spectacular landscape provides perfect conditions and terrain to experience the thrill of flying over mountains and seemingly endless valleys and gorges, and with the help of specialist instructors your first flights can be accompanied. In spring and summer the scenery is especially colourful but the views remain breathtaking all year round, and of course once you’re back on terra firma your appetite will be whetted to explore the pine forests on foot as well!
For a slightly less strenuous, but rather more romantic experience, how about a hot air balloon flight in the Ricote valley? The golden hues of the countryside along the course of the River Segura are an unforgettable sight from the air, and this is the perfect airborne adventure to share with your partner or friends, relaxing as you admire a landscape full of fruit orchards, crop fields, mountains and small towns in the heart of the Region of Murcia.
Back to faster and more exciting flying, if this is your preference then a trip on a micro-light is the thing for you. In Los Alcázares you can take a flight over the coastline and calm water of the Mar Menor in one of these fast, light aircraft, whose characteristics allow you and your pilot to go wherever you want, seeing beaches, islands, and all kinds of details which can only be spotted from the air. In other words, you can choose your own route and decide exactly which areas you want to see!
Still in the role of co-pilot, you might want to book a flight from San Javier on one of the small planes which fly over the Region at a slightly higher altitude. The usual route includes impressive views of the Mar Menor, La Manga, the regional park of Calblanque and Cabo de Palos, and in the right conditions you can easily see the contrast between the crystal-clear water of the Mediterranean and the shallow waters of the Mar Menor. Many of us will remember seeing this at higher speed on aircraft taking off and landing at San Javier airport in the past, but this takes the experience to another level!
For a real adrenaline buzz, though, nothing will beat the chance to try a parachute jump from planes setting out from Alhama de Murcia. If your dream is to experience the extreme emotion of jumping from a place three kilometres off the ground, this is your chance to make it come true, and again there is the option to do so in tandem with your qualified instructor. The sensation of free fall is one of the most intense and memorable you will ever have, and when the chute opens of course you have plenty of time to admire the stunning views (while breathing a huge sigh of relief!)
All of these options are at your fingertips: simply call one of the businesses specializing in adventure tourism as supplied by the tourist board here!
So, are YOU ready to conquer the skies of Murcia???
