Top beaches to visit in Murcia, Spain: Ultimate Costa Calida beach guide
Visit the top beaches on Spain’s Costa Cálida in Murcia
The Costa Cálida on Spain’s southeast coast has hundreds of the highest quality beaches in the country, if not in Europe. The Costa Cálida – which literally translates as the ‘Warm Coast’ – is located in the popular Murcia Region, one of the sunniest places in the whole of Europe, so it is perfect for grabbing some sun, sea and sand.
From the gorgeous beaches of Águilas and Mazarrón in the south all the way up to the white, sandy dunes of El Mojón in the north of the province which borders on Alicante’s Costa Blanca, passing by the truly unique Mar Menor beaches, the 250km of the Costa Cálida have something for everyone to enjoy.
It’s no wonder it’s one of the top destinations in Spain for holidaymakers looking for a nice vacation spot and for expats who relocate or retire to Spain.
So what are the best beaches to visit in Murcia?
These are all the top beach areas in Murcia, from south to north:
1. Águilas
The charming fishing town of Águilas is in the extreme southwest of the Murcia Region, close to the border with Almeria, Andalusia. Águilas 36 beaches have it all – the clear, blue water of the Mediterranean Sea, long swathes of golden sand and beautiful views – and it even has beaches where dogs are welcome too!

2. Mazarrón
The municipality of Mazarrón is probably one of the most popular with expats who move to live in Murcia, including in the friendly community of Camposol. Along its 35km of coastline, there are no fewer than 33 beaches, many of which have not been built-up and so give a feeling of space and nature, away from the overcrowded feel of many Spanish beaches.
3. Cartagena
Cartagena has the largest number of beaches of any municipality in the Region of Murcia, with 72 coves and beaches listed in the area. These include beaches on the Mar Menor lagoon which are perfect for both swimming and watersports, wide Mediterranean sandy beaches which stretch for several kilometres, family beaches in Isla Plana and La Azohía near Mazarrón, and many more.
4. La Unión
La Unión has two beaches, Playa Lastre and Playa de Portmán, which are especially popular in the summertime and are a good option if you like a more active beach day. While Lastre beach is a good spot for walking and has great restaurant facilities, Portmán beach is a popular place for fishermen.
5. Cabo de Palos
Cabo de Palos lies on the eastern edge of Cartagena, jutting out into the Mediterranean, and it is also the starting point for the La Manga Strip. The cape is part of the Islas Hormigas marine park, one of the most important areas of protected coastline in Europe, which is teeming with marine life and is hugely popular with divers.
6. Los Alcázares
One of the undisputed kings of holiday destinations in Murcia, Los Alcázares beaches have well cared-for sandy shores, a seafront walk and shaded seating behind them, and a full range of services and facilities for disabled bathers that make them suitable for everyone. The promenade is also very popular with walkers, joggers and cyclists and all along the paseo are plenty of shops, bars and restaurants.
7. San Javier
Located on the Mar Menor, San Javier contains both the areas of Santiago de la Ribera and La Manga, two popular hotspots for swimming and sunbathing. The water here is very calm thanks to the protected Mar Menor lagoon, and the shoreline slopes very gently down into the water, so it’s perfect for families with children, as well as watersports lovers.
8. San Pedro del Pinatar
The beaches of San Pedro del Pinatar are located on both the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean, including Playa El Mojón on the very northern tip of the Costa Cálida. San Pedro del Pinatar also plays host to the area known as Las Charcas, which includes the popular Baños de Lodo, or mud baths. These mineral-rich muds offer a natural, healthy spa which is good for clearing up medical complaints and acts as a free beauty treatment.
