Eggs, coffee and tropical fruits among the biggest price rises in Spain over the past year
Olive oil is down 16.8% in the past year, but don't forget it's still 64% more expensive than it was in 2021

The cost of a weekly shop in Spain has climbed sharply over the past year, with eggs, fresh vegetables, tropical fruits and coffee among the products that have seen the biggest price increases, according to new figures from the National Institute of Statistics covering the twelve months to February 2026.
Eggs have seen the most dramatic rise, up 30.1% on a year ago. Vegetables grown for their fruit, covering tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes, peppers and similar produce, have risen by 15.2%, while green legumes including green beans, peas and broad beans are up 9.7%. Tropical fruits such as avocados, mangoes, bananas and pineapples have climbed 8.6% and coffee is 8.3% more expensive than this time last year.
Other notable rises include fresh citrus fruits up 7.6%, chocolate up 6% and fresh berries and fresh meat both up 5.9%.
While most of us are feeling the pinch, certain grocery staples have actually come down in price. Vegetable oils have dropped 14.1% over the year, with olive oil specifically falling 16.8%, which will come as welcome relief after years of steep increases.
That said, olive oil has still accumulated a 64% price rise since January 2021, so it remains far from the bargain it once was. Sugar is down 4.7%, potatoes have fallen 4.5%, plant-based drinks are 2.1% cheaper and pasta including macaroni and noodles has edged down 0.9%.
If we look at just the first two months of 2026, fresh berries have seen the most dramatic movement, up 55% since January, driven largely by a 51.4% spike in February alone. Green legumes are up 21.8% so far this year and cultivated vegetables have risen 12.3%.
On the other side, leafy vegetables such as lettuce, broccoli and cauliflower fell 1.5% in February compared to January, as did butter.
