Couch potato: The unbelievable item this Spanish man was filmed carrying on his electric scooter
Many people have taken to social media to comment on the behaviour of the daredevil scooter rider
Every other week it seems there is a news story in Spain about people riding dangerously on electric scooters – from towing a child’s pushchair and riding drunk with a beer in hand to riding two scooters at the same time.
It’s no wonder they have been banned from being taken on trains and buses in many places in Spain and they are increasingly more heavily regulated.
The very fact electric scooters haven’t been around for long means that rules as to what riders can do on them can still be a bit blurry, or at least not as well known.
Even so, there is one violation that would seem obviously against the rules – carrying a sofa down the middle of the street – but that didn’t stop one man in Elche from going viral online after he was recorded carrying a sofa on his electric scooter while driving down the middle of the road.

Comments about the surprising battery and endurance of the electric scooter in question have been top on people’s list that social media users have made about the event.
For police, though, it is harder to see the funny side; such reckless behaviour could have led to a serious accident.
Traffic regulations state that electric scooters must be used exclusively for the transport of a single person (not two or three) and any additional load that exceeds the space or interferes with safety is prohibited.
Carrying a sofa on an electric scooter would represent a danger – both for the driver and for other vehicles or pedestrians – and may result in a fine and the impounding of the scooter by the authorities.
Furthermore, according to the DGT, Spain’s traffic authority, “They cannot be ridden on pavements and are prohibited from circulating on interurban roads, crossings, highways, dual carriageways or urban tunnels,” a point that, as can be seen in the video, this reckless rider also ignored.
