Belgian expat found dismembered at Fuerteventura rubbish dump
Canary Island police have arrested the woman’s 22-year-old son on suspicion of murder

The disappearance of a Belgian expat in Fuerteventura has ended in horrifying fashion after her dismembered body was discovered at a landfill site on the Canary Island.
Katty Oosterlinck, 56, who lived in the town of Corralejo, had been reported missing on May 4 after friends and relatives became increasingly worried when they were unable to contact her for several days.
A major search operation involving police officers and volunteers was launched across the island as concern grew among both locals and the foreign resident community.
The case took a grim turn on Friday when officers discovered human remains at the Zurita waste processing plant in Puerto del Rosario.
Later the same day, Guardia Civil officers arrested Oosterlinck’s 22-year-old son on suspicion of murder.
Investigators from the Judicial Police in Las Palmas reportedly spent hours reconstructing the events leading up to the woman’s death before carrying out the arrest.
Police also searched the victim’s home in Corralejo along with other locations believed to be connected to the investigation.
Authorities have not yet revealed how Oosterlinck died or released details about the alleged circumstances surrounding the killing.
The victim’s body has been transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine in Las Palmas, where an autopsy is expected to determine the exact cause of death.
News of the case has sent shockwaves through Fuerteventura’s large expat population, with many foreign residents having closely followed appeals for information after Oosterlinck was first reported missing earlier this month.
The case has also drawn comparisons with another high-profile killing in the Canary Islands last year, when the dismembered body of Colombian woman Triana Arias was discovered on a beach in Gran Canaria after she vanished following a night out.
