Spain's tourism holds steady as visitor spending climbs despite global uncertainty
March figures show rising tourist spend and strong UK demand, with Andalucía leading growth
Spain’s tourism sector continues to show resilience, with new figures confirming a steady rise in both visitor numbers and spending as the year gets underway. In March alone, 6.8 million international tourists arrived in Spain, a 3.3% increase on the same month last year. At the same time, total spending reached €9.606 billion, up 5.4%, setting a new record for the third month of the year. The figures suggest a clear trend, with spending growing faster than visitor numbers.
That balance is something the sector has been watching closely in recent months. Earlier expectations pointed to Spain benefiting as a “safe haven” destination during international uncertainty, although rising costs were seen as a potential drawback.
The latest data appears to support that outlook. While growth is no longer as rapid as in previous years, it remains consistent. Since mid-2025, increases in visitor numbers have generally stayed below 4%, pointing to a more stable phase after the post-pandemic surge.
British tourists once again led the way in March, with nearly 1.3 million visitors travelling to Spain. They also accounted for €1.235 billion in spending, around 15% of the total, underlining the continued importance of the UK market.
At a regional level, Andalucía stood out with particularly strong growth. The region welcomed 1.2 million visitors, an increase of 10.8% compared to last year, making it one of the best-performing areas. The Canary Islands remained steady at 1.6 million visitors, while Catalonia saw a slight drop in numbers, although spending there rose significantly.
Across the country, the first quarter of 2026 has brought in 17.5 million international tourists, 2.5% more than the same period last year. Total spending over those three months reached €25.017 billion, a 6.3% increase.
On an individual level, visitors are also spending more. The average trip now comes to €1,411 per person, or €198 per day, both slightly higher than a year ago.
Despite the positive figures, there are still concerns within the industry. Rising fuel costs remain a key issue, particularly for airlines. Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo recently acknowledged the situation, warning that it should be addressed “before signs of shortages begin to emerge,” while also stressing that Spain remains in a “calm” position.
For now, the overall picture is one of cautious confidence. Visitor numbers are growing steadily, spending is increasing, and key markets like the UK continue to deliver. The challenge ahead will be maintaining that momentum while managing the external pressures that could shape the months to come.
