Year-round beach cleaning planned for Santiago de la Ribera and La Manga
A new service brings daily beach cleaning with extra help in the busiest months

The San Javier Town Council has hired a company to clean the beaches in Santiago de la Ribera and La Manga del Mar Menor all year round. The service will be flexible and will work a bit differently for each beach town.
In Santiago de la Ribera, the majority of the work will be carried out from June to September, with two workers and a tractor to clean the beach every morning, seven days a week. Outside the summer months there will be regular upkeep.
In La Manga the service will be a bit more extensive. Staff and machinery will vary depending on the time of year. In summer, tractors, 4x4 buggies, and tipper trucks will be used on both the Mediterranean and Mar Menor sides, with extra workers for busy periods like Easter, Christmas, and public holidays. Staff numbers will range from three to eight, and night shifts will be added in July and August.
In both areas the new service will focus on the litter that the machines can’t handle like seaweed and other plant material. Around 400 bins will be emptied and cleaned, and rubbish will be collected in areas the street-cleaning service doesn’t reach. The contractor will also maintain beach access points, walkways, foot showers, benches, signs, handrails, toilets, Civil Protection posts, and lookout huts.
There will also be a full-time coordinator who will supervise the teams year-round. Cleaning happens every day, including weekends and holidays. In La Manga, bins will usually be emptied at night between midnight and 7:00am.
Overall, the beaches should look great all year round. And as this service is flexible, if there is heavy rain or storms, the team will be on hand to help out in the aftermath.
