Tourist cyclist killed after being hit twice by vehicles on Mallorca country road
Man in his 40s dies at the scene after collision involving van and car near Santa Maria del Camí
A tourist on a cycling holiday in Mallorca has died after being struck by two vehicles on a rural road between Santa Maria del Camí and Santa Eugènia. The man, believed to be in his 40s, had been staying in the Playa de Palma area and was out riding on Friday morning when the crash happened. His nationality has not yet been made public. The collision occurred on the Ma 3030. Initial reports from the scene indicate that the cyclist came out of a junction and entered the main road, where he was first hit by a Volkswagen Transporter. The impact threw him into the air and dragged him several metres along the tarmac. Moments later, a Peugeot Rifter passed the spot and was unable to avoid colliding with him again.
Emergency services received several calls and quickly sent ambulances from SAMU 061, along with officers from the Santa Maria del Camí Policía Local and the Guardia Civil. Medics tried to resuscitate the cyclist but were unable to save him and he was pronounced dead at the scene. One of the drivers involved suffered facial injuries and was treated by medical staff.
Police sources quoted in local reports say early investigations suggest the cyclist rode through a stop sign at the junction before being hit by traffic travelling in the opposite direction. The Guardia Civil’s traffic division has taken charge of the inquiry to clarify exactly how the fatal crash unfolded and to determine any responsibility.
Debris from the impact, including the man’s badly damaged bicycle and the shattered windscreen of the Volkswagen van, was left scattered across the carriageway as officers cordoned off the area to carry out their work.
The Guardia Civil continues its investigation into the circumstances of the collision.
