Torrevieja's British community honours the fallen on Remembrance Day
Armistice Day is celebrated in both the UK and Spain every year on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month
The British community in Torrevieja came together on Monday November 11 to observe Remembrance Day, also known as Poppy Day and Armistice Day, in a solemn and traditional ceremony. The event, which has been held annually on the 11th day of the 11th month at 11am since 1920, pays tribute to those who have lost their lives in wars and terrorism.
This year's ceremony was particularly poignant, as the Costa Blanca expat community also remembered the victims of the recent flooding that devastated nearby Valencia.
This year’s event was attended by the Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, and other local officials, as well as representatives from the Royal British Legion and the Anglican Church in Torrevieja.
The ceremony took place at the Arciprestal de la Inmaculada Concepción parish church, where a memorial mass was officiated by Father Richard Seabrook. The mass was followed by a floral offering in the Plaza de la Constitución, where wreaths were laid in memory of the fallen.
Around 500 people came out in honour of Poppy Day, including veterans of the Royal British Legion, who wore their uniforms and medals with pride. The ceremony was also attended by members of the local police force and other dignitaries.
The British community in Torrevieja has a long history of observing Remembrance Day, which is a significant event in the UK calendar. The date, November 11, marks the time when the armistice of World War I came into effect, and the Remembrance Poppy has become an emblem worn by most Britons on this day.
Torrevieja has a large British expat community, with around 5,000 registered residents. Although this number has declined in recent years, the community remains strong and active, and events like Remembrance Day are an important way for them to come together and honour their heritage.
