Murcia braced for blood rain this weekend: Weather forecast March 19-22

Remove those white cushions from your outdoor seating area and hold off on washing the windows until next week: the muddy calima rain is back!

The Region of Murcia is gearing up for a change of weather in the coming days, with the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) warning of calima dust in the air and the possibility of rainfall, which when combined make the dreaded blood rain.

Starting from this Thursday March 19, which is a bank holiday in the Region, the arrival of Saharan dust in the atmosphere is predicted to lead to a spike in levels of particulate matter in various municipalities and cause a temporary deterioration in air quality.

It is true that the probability of rain is low for this Thursday, with Aemet forecasting mostly sunny skies with some dark cloud cover moving in towards the evening, especially in the north and northwest of the Region, but we are more likely to see rain on Friday and Saturday.

On Friday, it will be much cloudier and the probability of rainfall will increase due to the arrival of Storm Therese, with the occasional showers “likely to be heavier inland” and more likely during the first half of the day, according to Aemet.

The combination of residual airborne dust and possible rain paves the way for a familiar and not entirely welcome phenomenon for Murcianos: muddy rain. This is when the dust particles cling to the raindrops and fall as browny-orangey muck that gets smeared all over cars, windows, outdoor spaces and garden furniture.

In addition, Friday will bring a drop in temperatures, especially maximums during the day, which will only reach up to 16ºC at their highest point, as opposed to the 18-19ºC we have had recently.

For Saturday, Aemet forecast more “overcast skies with occasional showers during the first half of the day, tending to clear up during the afternoon,” but there is also a clear tendency for the calima Saharan dust to hang around all day.

Interestingly, they also note that “minimum temperatures will fall slightly or remain unchanged” while “maximum temperatures rise, more markedly inland”.

For Sunday, no rain nor haze are forecast; just “skies with intervals of high cloud… temperatures with slight changes” and “light, variable winds”. Altogether a much calmer, more pleasant day ahead of sunnier skies and warmer temperatures to come at the beginning of next week.
