Heat linked to 96 deaths in one week across the Valencian Community
The latest figures bring the estimated number of heat-related deaths this summer to 458, with Alicante recording the highest number during the latest extreme heat episode

The latest figures show the impact of this summer's extreme temperatures, with 96 deaths in the Valencian Community attributed to the heat between August 17 and August 23.
The figure makes it the second deadliest week of the summer in the Region, according to estimates from the Daily Mortality Monitoring System, known as MoMo, run by the Carlos III Health Institute.
Alicante province was particularly badly affected. Of the 96 deaths recorded across the Valencian Community during the week, 40 were in Alicante, compared with 31 in Castellón and 25 in Valencia.
The latest figures take the total number of deaths attributed to high temperatures in the Valencian Community since the start of summer on June 21 to 458. That is considerably higher than the 350 recorded during the same period in 2025, an increase of 108 deaths.
August has accounted for 166 of this year's estimated heat-related deaths so far. Of these, 107 occurred between August 16 and August 23, coinciding with the latest spell of extreme temperatures.
Across Spain, 668 deaths were attributed to high temperatures during the week of August 17 to August 23, meaning the Valencian Community accounted for almost 15% of the national total.
The latest regional figures include 49 men and 47 women. Most of those who died were aged over 65, highlighting the risk extreme heat poses to older people.
Friday August 21 was the worst day of the latest episode, with 19 deaths attributed to the heat. There were 17 on Saturday August 22 and 16 on Thursday August 20.
The deadliest week of the summer so far was earlier in July. Between July 6 and July 12, 104 heat-related deaths were estimated in the Valencian Community. July 10 was also the deadliest individual day, with 22 deaths.
August's figures are almost identical to those recorded during the same period last year. Between August 1 and August 23, 2025, there were 165 deaths attributed to high temperatures. This year, the figure is 166, just one more.
The bigger difference comes when the whole summer is taken into account, with the Valencian Community already recording 458 estimated heat-related deaths compared with 350 at the same point last year.
