Eighth person arrested over shooting of Spanish politician
A new suspect has been arrested in Granada over the Vidal-Quadras assassination attempt
Spain’s National Police have arrested a man in Pinos Puente, Granada, in connection with the November 2023 assassination attempt on Alejo Vidal-Quadras, former leader of the PP in Catalonia and founder of Vox.
The arrest, which was made on Tuesday November 19, marks the eighth in the investigation.
The operation was coordinated by the Central Court of the National High Court. Earlier arrests include the alleged gunman, Mehrez Ayari, who was detained in the Netherlands in June 2024, and his brother, apprehended for planning and logistics.
The complex case, which links the Mocro Maffia Dutch criminal organisation and allegations of involvement by the Iranian regime, has also led to the arrests of several other people, among them a British woman who was subsequently released.
Vidal-Quadras was shot in the face on November 9, 2023, out on the street in broad daylight near his home in Madrid but survived the attack. He immediately blamed Iran for the shooting, given that he is a vocal critic of the regime.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities piece together the events surrounding the high-profile attempt on Vidal-Quadras’ life.
