Dead body washes up on La Manga beach
The Guardia Civil has confirmed he is a missing Belgian man who went missing while windfoiling on the Mar Menor
The body of a 73-year-old Belgian man was found at around 7pm this Wednesday afternoon, January 28, washed up on the shore of the Playa Chica beach in La Manga del Mar Menor, according to sources at the 112 Emergency Coordination Centre.
The Guardia Civil has taken charge of the investigation to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident. They have now determined that the deceased was a Belgian man who had gone out windfoiling on the Mar Menor and who was later reported missing by his relatives.
The Maritime Rescue Service began a search by sea and requested the assistance of the San Javier Local Police to conduct a search by land, in the area between the Tomás Maestre marina and the end of La Manga.
The man was wearing a white helmet and using a yellow sail and a red board, according to information provided by his relatives. Shortly afterwards, local police officers observed a yellow sail and a wingfoil board matching the description provided on some rocks at the height of kilometre 15 of the La Manga strip.
At that same point, in an area that was difficult for the Rescue service to access due to strong waves and rough seas, the body of a man was found wearing a white helmet.
