Why Tenerife keeps British holidaymakers coming back year after year
Easy flights, winter sun, familiar resorts and dramatic landscapes all help make the island a firm favourite for UK travellers
Ask regular British visitors why they keep choosing Tenerife and the answer is often very simple: the weather can be trusted. While the UK sits under long spells of cold rain and grey skies, Tenerife usually stays mild through autumn and winter, with daytime temperatures often hovering between 20 and 24°C.For many people that makes it one of the most reliable winter sun options within a few hours’ flight of home.
Getting there is straightforward. Direct flights run from major UK airports such as London Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds Bradford and Glasgow, with a typical journey time of around four and a half hours. Airlines including Jet2, easyJet, Ryanair and TUI operate regular services, and package holidays are widely available. Some travellers opt for a private jet when flying in groups or looking for more flexible departure times, particularly for short luxury breaks.
Much of the island’s south coast is set up with British visitors in mind. Resorts like Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos offer beachfront hotels, self catering apartments and family complexes. Menus range from Spanish seafood to full English breakfasts, supermarkets stock familiar brands and English is commonly spoken in bars and shops. For families and older travellers, that sense of familiarity removes a lot of the worry from the trip.Tenerife is also a strong choice for those travelling with children or grandchildren. Siam Park in Costa Adeje, often rated among the best water parks in the world, is a major draw with its slides, wave pools and family areas. Other options include Aqualand, Loro Parque in Puerto de la Cruz, and whale watching trips from Los Cristianos and Puerto Colón, which together can easily fill several days without long transfers.
Anyone who leaves the main resort strip quickly finds a different side to the island. At its centre, Teide National Park surrounds Mount Teide, Spain’s highest mountain. Drives through the park pass lava fields, pine forests and striking volcanic rock formations, while a cable car carries visitors close to the summit on clear days. In the north, towns such as La Orotava, Garachico and Puerto de la Cruz offer a quieter atmosphere, with historic streets, botanical gardens, seafront promenades and smaller local restaurants.
Food is another part of the appeal. Away from hotel buffets, many visitors discover traditional Canarian cooking, from papas arrugadas with mojo sauce to fresh fish, grilled meats and hearty stews. In smaller towns, family run restaurants and guachinches serve simple dishes made from local ingredients, giving a closer look at everyday island life. For those who like to stay active, Tenerife supports hiking, cycling, paragliding and water sports. El Médano on the south east coast is well known among windsurfers and kitesurfers thanks to its steady winds, and boat trips from southern marinas frequently spot pilot whales and dolphins in the strait between Tenerife and La Gomera.
Over time, this mix of reliable weather, easy travel, family friendly attractions and varied scenery has created a strong link between Tenerife and the UK. Many British visitors return every winter, some for several weeks at a time, and others buy holiday apartments or spend part of the year on the island. That combination of familiarity and variety helps explain why Tenerife remains one of the most consistent choices for British travellers looking for a break in the sun.
