Torrevieja beaches, Piscinas Naturales
Piscinas naturales, means natural swimming pools
The "Piscinas Naturales" (natural swimming pools) next to the Paseo Juan Aparicio in the centre of Torrevieja are hugely popular with bathers, providing safe, clean areas in which to enjoy the calm water of the Mediterranean and being located near the densely populated central shopping area. Although they are called “natural”, this refers only to the fact that swimmers can venture out directly to the open sea: the jetties which enclose the coves were created artificially when the Paseo was remodelled.
The beaches (one of 4,000 square metres and the other of only 412m2) are surrounded by rocks and posidonia meadows, making it a good area for a little light snorkeling, and metal steps have been installed to help people get out of the water. Access for bathers of limited mobility is also provided, and another of the main attractions of these little coves is the proximity of shops, bars and restaurants, which line the seafront behind them.
At the southern end of the Piscinas is the emblematic statue of the Hombre del Mar and the beginning of the Dique de Levante, where locals and visitors enjoy a brisk walk in the winter and, in many cases, a rather more leisurely stroll in summer.
There is also a very popular photographic point in the form of a sculpture called “La Bella Lola”, a concrete bench with bronze figure seated looking dreamily out to sea, a figure which has appeared on countless thousands of snaps with sandwich eating couples sitting alongside her on the rocks.
The central location means, of course, that parking is not always easy even out of season, and bus and bicycle transport are often better options for those for whom it’s too far to walk. There is a limited amount of parking out of season, but another good option is to park next to the fishing port and walk: parking inside the marina is only a euro for the whole day ( correct summer 2014).
