Storm Herminia leaves one dead, grounds flights and causes chaos throughout Spain
Northern Spain is bearing the brunt of the bad weather but the entire country is feeling the impact
The high-impact storm Herminia is coursing through Spain this week and it’s sadly claimed the life of a young man in Ourense. The destructive weather has also left more than 13,000 households without electricity and has led to widespread air, sea and rail cancellations.
Galicia in the north of the country is without doubt bearing the brunt and remains on red alert for rain, snow, gale-force winds and treacherous waves, but orange warnings, representing a serious risk, have also been issued in Andalucía, Aragon, Asturias, Castilla-La Mancha, the Region of Murcia, the Basque Country and the Valencian Community.

The tragic death in the Ourense town of Amoeiro occurred early on Monday morning, January 27. According to local police reports, a 51-year-old man lost control of his vehicle, the car went off the road and crashed into a wall. The driver was the only occupant and, according to the Guardia Civil, was not wearing a seat belt.
Also in Galicia, thousands of people were left without electricity by mid-morning, affecting above all the province of A Coruña, with 7,000 homes in the dark, followed by Pontevedra (2,500), Ourense (2,200) and Lugo (1,400). By late afternoon, more than 9,000 people had recovered electricity, while almost 4,000 people still had power problems.
The number of incidents managed by Galician emergency personnel is close to 2,000 as the storm reaches its halfway point, which will continue over Galicia in the coming days with warnings for wind, driving rain, snow and high waves on Tuesday and Wednesday, January 28 and 29.
Meanwhile, in Andalucía, the 112 Emergency Service has managed a total of 193 incidents due to the strong gusts of wind and rain left by the storm Herminia in the region.

Most of the warnings have been concentrated in the provinces of Jaén (52), Córdoba (51), Almería (39) and Sevilla (21); incidents have also been coordinated in other provinces such as Granada (14) and Huelva (ten) and, to a lesser extent, in Málaga and Cádiz.
Most of the issues in Andalucía have been caused by falling trees and branches, but several reports have also come through of the winds blowing away billboards, roofs and street furniture and downing power lines.Flights, ferries and trains cancelled
The effects of the storm have also been felt in Galician airports, with some air connections to Madrid suspended from the terminals in Vigo and A Coruña, according to AENA.
Renfe, for its part, indicated around midday on Monday that the circulation of medium-distance trains between A Coruña and Ferrol, which had been interrupted since Sunday due to adverse weather conditions, had been re-established. However, the circulation of medium-distance trains with Asturias between the towns of Ferrol-Ribadeo-Oviedo remains suspended.

The situation has also been complicated on the Andalucían coast, where Herminia has caused cancellations in practically all the connections from the port of Tarifa (Cádiz) with Tangier.
Regional governments across the country have made the call to close public parks due to the risk of falling branches.
Storm Herminia will continue to affect Spain on Tuesday January 28 and will put almost all of Spain on alert for waves, winds and snow.
