Segura River water reserves in Murcia hit their best level since 2013
While the rest of Spain sees reservoir levels dipping, the Segura basin is heading in the opposite direction

Water reserves in the Segura River basin reservoirs are continuing to recover, with levels now sitting at just above 58% of capacity and rising, according to the latest figures from the Ministry for Ecological Transition.
The basin currently holds 662 cubic hectometres of water, five more than the previous week, making this the best position the Region of Murcia has been in since 2013.
The improvement is particularly striking when compared to where things stood just twelve months ago. Reserves at this point last year were at just 332 cubic hectometres, meaning current levels have almost doubled in the space of a year. To find a comparable figure you'd need to go back to the 2013 hydrological year, when the season closed with 648 cubic hectometres.
The Segura basin's recovery is also bucking a national trend. Spanish reservoirs overall have edged down slightly, currently sitting at 83.4% of capacity after a small weekly decrease, with the lack of rainfall in recent weeks making itself felt in other parts of the country.
For the Segura, much depends on what happens further upstream. The Tagus River basin, which feeds the Segura through the Tagus-Segura transfer system, currently sits at 79.3% capacity overall.
However, the two key reservoirs that supply the transfer aqueduct directly, Entrepeñas and Buendía, have lost just under 12 cubic hectometres in the past week and now hold 1,649 cubic hectometres combined, representing around 65.5% of their total capacity. Buendía alone stands at just under 60% while Entrepeñas is at a healthier 78%.
