Record-breaking drug bust in Cádiz uncovers 20 tons of hashish hidden among peppers
Twenty arrested as police dismantle two drug trafficking operations targeting Europe via refrigerated trucks
In a major breakthrough, Spanish police have intercepted a staggering 20 tons of hashish concealed inside refrigerated trucks transporting green peppers, marking one of the largest drug busts in recent history. The seizures were part of two coordinated operations in Cádiz, with the drugs destined for distribution across Europe, cleverly packaged in colourful wrappers resembling chocolate bars to target younger consumers. The operation, a joint effort involving Moroccan authorities and led by Spain’s Special Anti-Drug Prosecutor’s Office in Algeciras, resulted in 20 arrests over just three days. The vehicles, rigged with false bottoms to evade detection, were stopped at the ports of Algeciras and Granada. One truck, carrying 15 tons of hashish, was found at a property in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, while another shipment of around 8 tons was uncovered at an industrial warehouse in Granada.
During transit, members of the drug ring conducted counter-surveillance activities to warn of law enforcement presence and safeguard the operation. Police also seized nine vehicles, including trucks, vans, and cars, along with an automatic pistol and over €7,000 in cash.
Officials highlighted that this is part of a continuing crackdown, emphasizing the close international cooperation that underpins their success. “These operations testify to the excellence of the security cooperation relations between Spain and Morocco,” said the police, “based on solidarity, mutual trust and a firm will to eradicate these criminal organisations.”
The discovery of brightly wrapped hashish bricks illustrates evolving tactics aimed at expanding the drug trade’s appeal, especially among young people. These operations send a strong signal that law enforcement agencies remain vigilant in disrupting the sophisticated networks behind narcotics trafficking through the Mediterranean.
