Plaza de Abastos, Cieza
Cieza indoor market
One of the most enjoyable aspects of visiting Spanish towns is the existence of traditional market halls, Plaza de Abastos, selling a range of local fresh produce and goods on a daily basis. These are usually supplemented by weekly markets, with a larger range of goods.
Cieza has a particularly attractive Plaza de Abastos, built between 1927 and 1929 by architect Julioz Carrilero Prats from Albacete. It opened in May 1929 and was constructed in an eclectic style, with a square central section and two single floor adjoining rectangular wings with independent entrances.
It’s worth taking time to look at the decorative features jutting out from the roof , comprising floral garlands and winding spirals made of plaster.
The market is open for business Monday to Friday am and pm and Saturdays in the mornings only.
There is parking around the market square, and the tourist office is situated in the same location.
During the winter months the artisan market of Los Frailes is held here one Sunday a month.
