Playa de Los Locos, a long sandy beach in central Torrevieja
Los Locos beach, Torrevieja
A full range of services close to shops, restaurants and the town centre
It would be nice to think that the Playa de Los Locos (“beach of the madmen”) received its name on account of the hordes of British sunbathers who stay out in the midday sun, but sadly this is not the case: instead, it is known under this name on account of lunatic asylum which used to stand next to the beach.
As locations for being confined go, this one is certainly not bad: the fine sand occupies an area of over 25,000 square metres along the 760-metre beach on the way out of the northern end of the town centre. Bathing conditions are normally excellent, and the Blue Flag status awarded to Playa de Los Locos indicates that a wide range of facilities are provided.
Among these are four lifeguard towers in high season, complemented by a Red Cross first-aid point on the promenade of the Avenida Dr Mariano Ruis Cánovas, as well as beach-bars, sun loungers and wooden walkways all along the beach. These walkways can be accessed by ramps for those of limited mobility, and disabled parking spaces are also marked out on the main road.
During high season pedal-boats can be hired at the northern end of the beach, and children’s play facilities, a moored raft and a beach volleyball net are also provided alongside the bins (emptied daily) and foot showers.
The residential blocks which lie on the inland side of the road provide a number of shops, bars and restaurants for those who don’t like their packed lunch on the sand, and a chemist’s is also among the many establishments in this busy part of the town. As with the vast majority of urban beaches parking can be a problem, so it’s worth considering either cycling in (bicycle racks are provided) or the bus (Line A stops just at the back of the beach).
Apart from being awarded the Blue Flag the Playa de Los Locos is also recognized by Qualitur, and is without doubt one of the main features which led to the exponential growth of the town during the 1990s and the first years of the current millennium.
