Murcia team in the running to design Europe's future euro banknotes
A Murcian design studio is the only Spanish finalist in the competition to create the next generation of euro notes
The next euro banknotes could have a distinctly Murcian touch after a local design studio was shortlisted by the European Central Bank (ECB) to help redesign Europe's currency.
Murcia-based Rubio & del Amo, working alongside Cruz más Cruz, is one of just 10 finalists selected from more than 1,200 entrants across Europe. It's also the only Spanish team still in the running.
The competition is part of the ECB's plans to introduce a new series of euro banknotes, with designers asked to create concepts based on one of two themes: European Culture or Rivers and Birds.
The Murcian team's proposal, which celebrates some of Europe's most influential cultural figures, has been chosen as one of the five finalists in the European Culture category.
Among the famous faces featured in the designs are composer Ludwig van Beethoven, scientist Marie Curie, writer Miguel de Cervantes, inventor Leonardo da Vinci, opera singer Maria Callas and peace campaigner Bertha von Suttner.
The designers say their aim was to show that European culture is "not a static inheritance" but something that continues to shape everyday life.
The competition has now entered its next stage, with the shortlisted designs set to be shown to the public as part of an online consultation. The ECB will also carry out surveys across Europe before its Governing Council makes the final decision, which is expected by the end of 2026.
Although cash payments are becoming less common as digital transactions continue to grow, the ECB says redesigned banknotes remain an important symbol of European identity.
If the Murcian team's proposal is ultimately chosen, millions of people across Europe could one day be carrying their work in their wallets.
