Mazarrón to be twinned with two Almería towns, recognising a shared history in mining
Mazarrón consolidates its mining history by twinning with the towns of Vera and Cuevas del Almanzora in the provice of Almeria
On November 28 at 1pm, the Plenary Hall of the Casas Consistoriales near the Town Hall of Mazarrón will be the scene of a historic moment, the official twinning between Mazarrón and the Almería municipalities of Vera and Cuevas del Almanzora. This event marks a milestone in the historical relationship that unites these towns, especially due to their shared mining past.
The Mayor of Mazarrón, Ginés Campillo – the driving force behind this initiative – stressed that this twinning not only strengthens the historical ties with the eastern part of Almería, but also honours the memory of the miners who, during the second half of the 19th century, gave their efforts and, in many cases, their lives in the mining operations of the region. A large part of this workforce came from Vera and Cuevas de Almanzora, contributing to the high importance of the mining industry in Mazarrón at that time.
The proposal for this twinning was publicly presented by the Mayor in February 2024, during an emotional tribute to the miners. Now, seven months later, the proposal will become a reality with the official signing of this agreement, which symbolises a new chapter of cooperation and union between these towns.
The event will be attended by institutional representatives from the three municipalities, who will celebrate the historical, cultural and social wealth they share. This twinning also seeks to open new avenues for collaboration in areas such as tourism, culture and local development, further strengthening the bond between these neighbouring towns.
Mazarrón, Vera and Cuevas del Almanzora will consolidate their close links under the common legacy of their mining history.
