La Casa Granero in Calasparra
La Casa Granero
The Casa Granero in Calasparra is a Neo-classical building which was built by the Count of the Valle de San Juan in 1808 (as can be seen in the inscription at the entrance), and is nowadays home to the tourist office of the town. It occupies a floor area of 929 square metres and was originally built for two purposes, serving as a private home as well as a granary.
Calasparra underwent a tremendous period of change when power was taken from the religious orders who had dominated the economic structure of the Region of Murcia for hundreds of years in the 19th century. Calasparra had belonged to the Order of San Juan for 600 years, but as the power of the Church finally decreased political and economic power in the main “villas” of Spain passed out of the hands of the religious orders and was taken over by landowners and powerful families, who now dominated the municipal councils.
Many properties previously belonging to the church were sold off to the highest bidder, and to judge by the date of the granary’s construction this may have been the case of the area where the granary is located.
This building was both a rice mill and a storehouse, as well as a residential home. The building belonged to the descendents of the Count of the Valle de San Juan until 1978, when it was acquired by the Town Hall.
Today it houses the town's rice museum and the municipal music school as well as the tourist office.
