People in Spain are being warned of a fake account pretending to be the Met Office sending out emergency messages
Spain’s Met Office has issued a warning to people to be wary if they receive any SMS text messages on their phone claiming to be from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
Aemet does not send text messages to people’s phones under any circumstances, so if you receive a text like this one it will be a scam from an impersonator.
The clarification comes after several users were apparently warned via a message telling them that a severe storm is forecast in their region.
Aemet has stated that it “never sends SMS. If you receive a similar message, do not open the link” because it would likely be designed to install malware onto your device.
There have been devastating storms in Spain in the last few weeks and some people in areas where there have been red alerts have received loud alerts on their phones from emergency services, but these official communications never include links to third parties.
