Another migrant boat was intercepted off the Region of Murcia's coast this Sunday August 30, after the Guardia Civil spotted the vessel near Cabo Cope in Águilas, and tracked its movements before intervening, according to the Government Delegation. Officers intercepted seven Algerian nationals who were on board.

 

While the Guardia Civil believes this accounted for practically everyone on the boat, the search continued into Sunday afternoon as a precaution. The seven migrants were handed over to the National Police and taken to the Temporary Immigration Detention Centre (CATE), where deportation proceedings will now begin.

 

This marks the fifth boat detected along the Region's coastline in the space of two weeks, taking the total number of migrants to arrive in that time to more than 200. Early on Saturday morning, another boat had landed near Calblanque Natural Park, at Cala Dorada, where the Guardia Civil intercepted 57 people. Police sources had initially suggested closer to 70 people were on board, though the Government Delegation later clarified that the number intercepted matched the full crew.

 

The latest arrivals come amid an ongoing political row between the Government Delegation and the regional president over how the Murcian coastline is being monitored.
