Explore 1,200 years of Murcia with new guided tours this autumn
Murcia City launches free themed routes to celebrate its rich history and heritage

Jesús Pacheco, the Councilor in charge of tourism, said, “We want Murcia to look back on itself with pride and for everyone, both those who live here and those who visit us, to learn about the richness of its past through live, participatory, and rigorous experiences with this proposal for guided tours of the municipality.”
The tours are free for all to join, although places are limited so advance booking is necessary. Each route offers a unique way to explore the city’s heritage:
- “Twelve Centuries in Our Institutions” takes participants inside historic halls such as the Alcázar Mayor, the Convent of Santa Clara, and Murcia City Hall. Here visitors can trace how local governance and institutions have evolved over twelve centuries.
- “A Walk Through Our History Through Its Bibliography” explores Murcia’s impressive archives, libraries, and museums. Attendees will see manuscripts, maps, and documents that reveal layers of the city’s story preserved on paper.
- “1,200 Years in the Huerta and the Monteagudo Complex” invites people outdoors to discover the traditional agricultural landscape that has shaped Murcia. Highlights include historic sites like Monteagudo Castle and tales of legendary figures such as Alfonso el Sabio (Alfonso the wise aka Alfonso X) from 13th century and El Rey Lobo (the Wolf King): a Muslim king of Christian origin from 12th century.
- For families and the young at heart, the “Murcia and Its 1,200 Years” cultural gymkhana combines a treasure hunt with fun challenges. This interactive tour turns history into an entertaining adventure, encouraging participants to actively engage with the city’s past.
In addition to these tours, an ambitious sculptural mural celebrating Murcia’s rich history is underway in the city, accompanied by a time capsule that captures memories and messages for future generations. This large-scale public artwork embodies 1,200 years of Murcia’s identity, blending history and art as a vivid tribute to the city’s legacy and future.
These autumn tours and public art initiatives connect present and past, giving everyone a chance to walk in the footsteps of those who shaped Murcia through centuries of change. Whether you’re a history buff or simply curious about your home or holiday destination, this programme offers a lively, hands-on way to explore the city.
