England beat Spain on penalties to win Euro 2025
The Lionesses defend their European crown and make history in Basel

England are once again champions of Europe after defeating Spain 3-1 in a penalty shootout, following a 1-1 draw after extra time in the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 final this Sunday July 27.
Sarina Wiegman’s side held their nerve in Basel, with goalkeeper Hannah Hampton saving two penalties before Chloe Kelly managed to strike the decisive penalty, just as she did in 2022. It was a moment of déjà vu and glory for the Lionesses.
Spain had taken the lead in the first half thanks to a goal by Mariona Caldentey, but England hit back with an equaliser from Alessia Russo after the break. Despite chances for both teams in extra time, the deadlock held.
Leah Williamson, who lifted the trophy in 2022, became the first England captain since Bobby Moore to win two major international titles. Meanwhile, 19-year-old Michelle Agyemang was named Young Player of the Tournament after a breakthrough performance across the competition.
This historic win marks England’s first major tournament triumph on foreign soil and cements their place as a dominant force in women’s football, along with Spain.
It seems the two sides are in for a long and exciting rivalry at the top of women’s international football.
