Córdoba's Mosque-Cathedral tops one million visitors for the third year running, despite a difficult start to 2026
A rail disaster, storms and international tensions all took their toll on numbers, but the monument's pulling power remains as strong as ever
More than a million people visited the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba in the first six months of 2026, making it the third consecutive year the monument has hit that milestone in the first half alone. The final tally of 1,099,223 visitors is impressive by almost any measure, though it does represent a 7.35% drop on the same period last year, and the Cathedral Chapter has been candid about why.The Adamuz train disaster and the subsequent disruption to the high-speed rail connection between Madrid and Andalucía took a significant toll, particularly in February, when visitor numbers fell by 17.27% year on year. Landslides caused by heavy rain then compounded the problem by affecting rail links between Córdoba and Málaga. Add in a succession of storms during the early months of the year and a difficult international climate that deterred long-haul travellers, and the dip in figures becomes easier to understand.
The monument had already faced significant challenges in the months before, including a fire that sparked global concern, a major restoration programme and a series of bomb threats that led to an arrest, making this latest period of disruption yet another chapter in a turbulent recent history for one of Spain's most iconic buildings.
Despite all of that, Canon José Juan Jiménez Güeto, spokesperson for the Cathedral Chapter, was upbeat. "The Mosque-Cathedral has once again demonstrated its enormous appeal, even in a semester that has been particularly challenging for travel," he said. "Surpassing one million visitors again confirms that we remain one of Spain's leading cultural and heritage landmarks."More than half of visitors, 53.52%, came from within Spain, with Andalucía, Madrid and Catalonia leading the domestic rankings. Among international visitors, France, the United States and Italy were the top three source markets.
The new Visitor Reception and Information Centre, which opened on January 20, has already recorded nearly 264,000 visits in its first five months, with the Cathedral Chapter describing it as establishing itself as an attraction in its own right. The Bell Tower drew 55,312 visitors, down 6.13% on last year but following a similar recovery curve to the main monument.
One genuinely bright spot in the data is the Fernandine Churches Route, which bucked the trend entirely, attracting 123,799 visitors, a 4.2% increase on the same period last year. The route's nighttime opening across seven churches on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings in July and August has also got off to an encouraging start, with 1,736 visitors recorded in just the first two weekends.
