Bottled gas goes up in price in Spain this week
The price of gas canisters has increased across Spain for four consecutive months

April is just around the corner and usually the last thing we’d be thinking about this time of year is heating, but the recent dreary weather throughout Spain means that most of us are still cranking up the heat. If you’re one of the eight million households that continues to use bottled gas in this country there’s some bad news, as gas canisters, or bombonas de butano, are going up in price again this week.
On Tuesday March 18, the maximum retail price of a bottled gas cylinder will increase by 6.19% to €17.67, marking its fourth consecutive price hike. On top of this, customers will also be charged an additional 20 cents per bottle due to a recent update of marketing costs.
This figure is before tax, so consumers can now expect to pay just shy of €22, on average, for their bottled gas.
As usual, the increase is down to a number of factors, including a rise in the price of raw materials (+4.89%) and in the cost of marketing (+14.27%).
The maximum sales price for bottled liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in containers weighing between 8 and 20 kilos is reviewed bimonthly on the third Tuesday of the month. This means that the next cost adjustment won’t be until May and if the spring forecast predictions prove correct, none of us will be worrying about the price of heating by then.
As of January 2025, around 23.1% of Spanish households continue to use bottled gas, primarily for cooking, heating and hot water. But the use of gas canisters has been declining over recent years, with a 25% drop between 2010 and 2021.
