ARCHIVED - Murcia government to repair gota fría storm damage on the RM-54 in Los Nietos
The project is added to others in roads in Cartagena with a budget of 600,000 euros
It is two and a half months since the Region of Murcia was hit by severe flooding as one of the heaviest “gota fría” storms in the last 50 years battered south-eastern Spain, and although the worst of the debris has been cleared there is still a lot of work to be done to repair and replace infrastructures in areas which suffered the most serious damage.
This is the case, for example, in the town of Los Nietos on the shore of the Mar Menor, where it has been confirmed that the regional government will be repairing the floodwater channel known as the Rambla de la Carrasquilla: the channel overflowed during the storm and engulfed the RM-54 road just outside the built-up area to the south. This work is added to other repairs and replacements undertaken on roads in the municipality of Cartagena for which a budget of around 600,000 euros has been set aside.
The announcement came in response to a request made by the Deputy Mayoress of Cartagena, Noelia Arroyo, and councillor María Casajús, before they visited other work which is already under way in the company of José Ramón Diez de Revenga, the minister for Development and Infrastructures in the regional government. As Sra Arroyo pointed out, when this “rambla” overflows the water heads to the small headland of Lengua de la Vaca and affects the beach of Los Nietos.
The work on the rambla and the RM-54 will begin as soon as authorization is forthcoming from the Department of the Environment, according to Sr Díez de Revenga.
Other repair work already in progress in Cartagena following the gota fría of September includes a project budgeted at 230,000 euros on the road between La Puebla and Pozo Aledo, where a 30-metre-long ditch appeared alongside the tarmac due to the erosive action of floodwater, and others on the RM-311 between El Albujón and Los Beatos and the RM-F54 between Los Belones and Los Urrutias.
