Antiguo mercado publico de La Union
Old public marketplace, La Unión
The former public market place in La Unión is one of the most emblematic buildings in the municipality, a symbol of the vast wealth generated in the Sierra Minera during the boom years of the early 20th century and gives an idea of the scale of economic activity taking place at this period in time.
It was inaugurated in 1907, and is all on one level, traders occupying the various niches and central area of the well lit building during its use as an indoor public market.
The building is constructed in the same modernist style as many of the buildings in Cartagena with which it is contemporary, a simple elegance and attention to detail key elements of this style of architecture which incorporates classical features with effusive decoration.
The marketplace was built by Pedro Cerdán, from Torre Pachecho, and Victor Beltrí, and is used today for a number of public functions and events, amongst them the Festival Cante de las Minas, one of the most prestigious and oldest Flamenco festivals in Spain. It is also the focal point for local fiestas and events, the main stage set up outside in the plaza in front of it.
The marketplace is right next to the Railway station, and there is plenty of parking alongside the railway station and behind it. This is also just a couple of minutes walk from the entrance to the Parque Minero and the parking for the complex.
In front of the market place is the Plaza Joaquín Costa, with plenty of shops and bars offering tapas and drinks, and there is also an open air café next to the railway station, which is a pleasant place to enjoy a spot of tapas after a visit to the mining park or the town itself.
