Alhama de Murcia and Condado de Alhama bin tax increases
A tax directive from the national government means Alhama Town Hall has to increase garbage taxes
Like all towns in Spain, Alhama de Murcia has been forced by the central government in Madrid to impose a new increased rate of rubbish tax for residents, including those of the Condado de Alhama urbanisation.
Local councillor for Finance, José Pedro Otón, expressed his dissatisfaction with the new tax. “This measure is unjustified and is not backed by the European directive, which only talks about sustainability and cleanliness, but does not require the creation of specific taxes,” he said, bemoaning that the increased rate will not mean “improvement in municipal services, as the new tax collected will go to national funds.”
In 2023, while other municipalities approved the increase, Alhama de Murcia decided to assume the expense, which meant savings of more than 1.1 million euros for the people of Alhama in 2024. Now, though, they have no choice but to pass the additional fees onto residents.
“Although we tried to avoid the application of this law in the municipality, the consequences could have been serious for the council, including fines and exclusion from subsidies.”
