Active mortar shell disabled by Navy bomb squad on popular Cádiz beach
Explosive device found near Camposoto beach bridge safely neutralised by specialist Navy divers

The potentially dangerous device was found close to bridge number 5 on the popular beach, prompting swift action from the Maritime Action Force’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit, part of the Cádiz Diving Unit (UNBUDIZ). The team, based at the Puntales Naval Station, was deployed by the Navy’s Maritime Operations and Surveillance Centre (COVAM).
Experts from the Navy's bomb squad examined the projectile and confirmed it contained a full explosive charge. Due to the high risk involved in moving it, they decided to destroy it on-site. Using controlled charges, the team safely neutralised the shell after confirming the area had been fully secured.
National Police officers from TEDAX, the Spanish bomb disposal unit, were also on the scene along with local officers from San Fernando, who helped set up a security perimeter to protect the public during the operation.
After the detonation, Navy personnel carefully collected the debris and checked the surrounding area to ensure there were no further explosives or environmental risks.
Although it is not unusual for devices like these to be found from time to time, the Navy warned that they can remain active for many years. “These kinds of shells can still be extremely dangerous even after a long time,” a Navy spokesperson said. “If anyone comes across a suspicious object, they should not touch it but call the authorities immediately.”
The Cádiz Diving Unit forms part of the Maritime Action Force, which plays a key role in protecting Spanish maritime interests and works in close cooperation with government agencies responsible for safety at sea. Its members include divers trained in underwater mine disposal and explosive ordnance experts qualified to carry out high-risk operations both on land and underwater.
