Alicante ramps up electric car charging spots across the city
New fast chargers in car parks, squares and markets make going green easier than ever
Alicante is making it simpler for electric vehicle owners to keep their cars powered up, with fresh charging points popping up in handy spots like public car parks, squares and even the Mercalicante food cluster. A big new station opened this Monday in the underground car park on Avenida de la Estación, run by Vectalia for the Valencian government. It offers 14 spaces with four ultra-fast chargers at 150 kW, which can give you 200 km range in just 15 minutes, plus six fast ones at 50 kW and four semi-fast at 22 kW.The setup, backed by Iberdrola bp pulse and Vectalia, cost over €600,000 and brings their ultra-fast points in Alicante province to 100, all running on renewable energy. Pablo Pirles, CEO of Iberdrola bp pulse, highlighted how they've rolled out 2,000 nationwide in two years through their partnership. Meanwhile, Antonio Arias, Vectalia's chairman and CEO, noted the challenges of fitting it into such a busy central spot.
Looking ahead, a truck charging hub is planned for Mercalicante between late 2026 and early 2027, with 12 ultra-fast points split for cars and lorries, at a cost of about €2 million. Alicante's mobility councillor, Carlos de Juan, is excited about the Mancomunidad de l'Alacantí's push too. They are set to add up to 20 stations here, creating at least 40 spaces in areas from Playa de San Juan to San Gabriel, Gran Vía, the old town and more.
De Juan said: "We hope that the works can begin and be completed during 2026. These charging points are planned for very specific areas, but we have allowed for flexibility so that companies can adjust the exact location." He expects the total to grow "exponentially" beyond the initial 64 or 68 points. Users will pay digitally per session and kWh used.
It's all part of a wider effort with public and private money to boost sustainable driving. As Pirles put it, these spots make electric cars practical for everyday life in Alicante.
